Bentley Torcal Makes Its Global Debut, Opening a New Electric Chapter for Crewe

Bentley has officially entered the electric era.

The British luxury marque has unveiled the all-new Bentley Torcal in London, introducing its first fully electric production model and, with it, a fourth model line alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga. Designed, engineered and built at Bentley’s Crewe headquarters, the Torcal represents one of the most significant changes in the company’s modern history.

A Bentley First

The Torcal is not simply another electric SUV wearing the Bentley badge. It is the company’s first production EV, arriving after years of development and changing expectations around luxury electric vehicles.

Bentley has deliberately approached electrification without abandoning the visual and material language that defines the marque.

The result is a large, sleek SUV measuring just over five metres long, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a pronounced stance. Its design introduces a more minimalist direction for Bentley while retaining recognizable references to the brand’s past.

The front end is particularly distinctive. Instead of requiring a conventional combustion-engine grille, Bentley has created what it calls the Floating Diamond Grille, incorporating 76 individually applied diamonds that illuminate as part of the vehicle’s welcome sequence. The Torcal is also the first Bentley to use the company’s modernized winged emblem.

Even the rear carries a piece of Bentley history. The tailgate design draws inspiration from the luggage carrier of the famous Blue Train Bentley, connecting the new electric model with one of the company’s most recognizable historical stories.

821 PS and 1,155 Nm

Electric propulsion has also given Bentley an opportunity to redefine what effortless performance means.

The Torcal uses two electric motors producing 821 PS and 1,155 Nm of torque. Bentley quotes a 0–60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, a top speed of 155 mph, and a maximum driving range of approximately 375 miles (600 km).

The power comes from a 113.2 kWh battery, while the 800-volt electrical architecture enables rapid charging. Bentley says the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 16 minutes under suitable high-power DC charging conditions.

That combination puts the Torcal firmly into performance-SUV territory, but Bentley’s objective is not simply to make the fastest electric luxury SUV.

The emphasis is on making the performance feel effortless.

Designed to Move Like a Bentley

One of the challenges facing any traditional luxury manufacturer entering the EV market is weight.

Electric vehicles can deliver extraordinary acceleration, but a luxury SUV still has to behave like a luxury car. Bentley has therefore equipped the Torcal with sophisticated chassis technology intended to control the considerable forces generated by its electric powertrain.

The vehicle features Bentley Active Ride, an active suspension and roll-control system using individually controlled dampers. Each wheel’s damper is connected to its own electrically controlled hydraulic pump, allowing the system to respond independently at each corner. The Torcal also uses all-wheel steering and all-wheel drive.

The combination is intended to give the Torcal the stability and refinement expected of a Bentley while maintaining the agility required from a vehicle producing more than 800 PS.

The Interior Is Where Bentley Gets to Be Bentley

If the exterior signals a new direction, the cabin is where the company makes the strongest argument that electrification does not mean abandoning traditional craftsmanship.

The Torcal combines natural materials, handcrafted veneers and contemporary technology.

Among the highlights is Ombre Walnut veneer produced by Mulliner, while the dashboard features Bentley’s first OLED touchscreen: a vertically curved 12.25-inch HD display.

The interior lighting system is equally elaborate.

Bentley’s Dynamic Waterfall Lighting uses more than 450 LEDs and can respond dynamically to the vehicle’s movement, creating an ambient effect designed to make the cabin feel almost alive.

The seats continue the Bentley philosophy of making long-distance travel part of the experience rather than simply getting from one location to another. The front seats offer 16-way adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage, while the rear bench incorporates powered adjustment and heating for the outer positions.

And for those who consider sound an essential part of the Bentley experience, the Torcal can be equipped with a 28-speaker, 1,780-watt Naim for Bentley system featuring Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 and individually configurable sound zones.

What Does an Electric Bentley Sound Like?

Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of the Torcal is something the electric powertrain technically does not need at all: an artificial sense of mechanical theatre.

Bentley has developed a new soundtrack intended to provide an emotional connection to the car’s performance, drawing inspiration from the character of its historic V8 engines rather than attempting to reproduce a conventional engine note literally.

It is an interesting solution to a problem facing virtually every performance manufacturer moving away from combustion engines.

The electric motor is extremely effective, but it is comparatively quiet.

Bentley is therefore attempting to replace some of the sensory drama lost with the disappearance of the internal-combustion powertrain.

A New Bentley Design Language

The Torcal may ultimately be remembered for more than being Bentley’s first EV.

It introduces a new design direction.

The company describes the exterior as a sleeker and more progressive interpretation of Bentley design, while still drawing from historical models. The long bonnet, muscular rear haunches, diamond grille and upright presence retain familiar Bentley themes, but the surfaces are considerably cleaner.

Inside, technology is integrated rather than simply displayed.

The result is a Bentley that is recognizably from Crewe without looking like an electric conversion of an existing combustion model.

That distinction matters.

Bentley is attempting to establish the Torcal as a new model family rather than simply adding batteries to an established product.

The Fourth Model Line

The Torcal expands Bentley’s range to four distinct model lines:

Continental GT

Flying Spur

Bentayga

Torcal

Its arrival also changes Bentley’s relationship with electrification.

The company had previously discussed an accelerated transition toward electric vehicles, but the market’s slower-than-expected adoption of luxury EVs led Bentley to reconsider the pace of that strategy. The Torcal therefore arrives not as the beginning of an immediate all-electric product blitz, but as Bentley’s carefully developed entry into the market.

And that makes the Torcal particularly important.

Bentley isn’t trying to convince customers that an electric vehicle can simply replace a V8.

It is attempting to demonstrate that an electric Bentley can still be unmistakably Bentley.

The Electric Bentley Has Arrived

For more than a century, Bentley’s identity has been built around enormous performance, handcrafted interiors, natural materials, effortless long-distance ability and an unmistakable sense of occasion.

The Torcal takes those ideas and places them around an electric powertrain.

With more than 800 PS, over 1,100 Nm of torque, approximately 375 miles of range, ultra-fast charging, active suspension, all-wheel steering and an interior designed around craftsmanship as much as technology, the Torcal is a substantial first step into Bentley’s electric future.

The bigger question now is not whether Bentley can build an electric vehicle.

It clearly can.

The question is what happens next.

For now, the Torcal stands alone as the company’s electric pioneer—and as Bentley’s clearest statement yet that the future of Crewe will be electric, but it intends to remain unmistakably Bentley.
