The Ford Mustang GTD has officially cemented its place as the king of American performance at the Nürburgring. As of yesterday, April 17, 2026, Ford announced that the new Mustang GTD Competition shattered previous records with a blistering official lap time.

The Official Record (April 2026)
- Lap Time: $6:40.835$
- The Driver: Dirk Müller (Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver).
- The Achievement: This makes the GTD Competition the fastest street-legal American car to ever lap the Nordschleife, beating the previous record held by the Corvette ZR1X ($6:49.275$) by more than 8 seconds.

Technical Evolution: How they did it
To shave 11 seconds off the standard GTD’s original time ($6:52.072$ set in 2025), Ford introduced the Competition model with several key upgrades:
| Feature | Specification / Update |
| Engine | Supercharged 5.2L V8 tuned to beyond 815 hp (826 PS). |
| Aerodynamics | Enhanced DRS, secondary front dive planes, and rear carbon fiber aero discs. |
| Weight | Significant reduction via magnesium wheels and carbon fiber bucket seats. |
| Grip | Revised high-performance Michelin tire compounds and a lighter damper system. |
The “Everyman” Performance
In a move that caught the industry’s attention, Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson who has fewer than 40 laps of experience at the “Green Hell” also piloted the car to a time of $6:49.337$. This was faster than Müller’s original 2025 record, proving the car’s extreme capability even for those who aren’t professional Le Mans winners.

Context in the “Ring” Hierarchy
With a 6:40.8, the Mustang GTD now sits in the elite top 10 overall for production/prototype cars at the Nürburgring, keeping pace with European titans like the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey. It is second only to the track-only Ford GT Mk IV, which recently set a 6:15.977.
