BYD SHARK Earns Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating, Strengthening Its European Ambitions
*The plug-in hybrid pick-up combines a ladder-frame platform, electric all-wheel drive and advanced driver-assistance technology, earning top marks in Euro NCAP’s latest safety assessment.*

The competition in the global pick-up market is no longer defined solely by towing capability, rugged construction or the ability to travel far beyond paved roads. Increasingly, electrification, cabin technology and occupant protection are becoming equally important considerations. BYD’s latest achievement with the SHARK brings those priorities into sharper focus.
The Chinese automotive manufacturer has announced that its SHARK DMO pick-up has received the maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, Europe’s independent vehicle safety assessment organisation. The result adds another significant credential to a model designed to combine the practicality of a traditional work vehicle with the refinement and technology associated with a modern sport utility vehicle.
The assessment awards the SHARK strong results across four principal categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road-user protection and safety assistance. Its scores were 82 per cent for adult occupants, 86 per cent for child occupants, 74 per cent for vulnerable road users and 87 per cent for safety assistance. <Link url=”https://www.euroncap.com/assessments/byd/shark/1249/” title=”Euro NCAP’s official assessment”/> provides the detailed breakdown.
## Safety Beyond the Five-Star Headline
While the overall rating is the headline achievement, the individual test results offer a more informative picture of the SHARK’s performance.
Euro NCAP recorded good protection in the frontal-offset and side-barrier evaluations, while the full-width rigid-barrier test also showed good protection for the driver’s critical body regions. The assessment highlighted protection for child occupants represented by six- and ten-year-old test dummies during the side-barrier impact.
The SHARK also features a child-presence detection system designed to warn when a child may have been left inside the vehicle. It is a particularly relevant feature in a vehicle intended to serve families as well as commercial users.
In the vulnerable road-user category, the pick-up’s autonomous emergency braking system performed well in its responses to cyclists and showed a good response to motorcyclists. Meanwhile, the safety-assistance evaluation recognised the performance of its emergency braking technology in vehicle-related scenarios, together with lane-departure support and speed-assistance functions.
There is, however, an important distinction behind the result. Euro NCAP states that the SHARK was assessed by Australia’s Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in 2025, with additional testing conducted by Euro NCAP. The European rating therefore incorporates the earlier ANCAP assessment rather than representing an entirely separate, wholly new crash-test programme.
That context does not diminish the rating, but it matters when interpreting what the result represents.
## The DMO Approach: Electrification Meets Utility
At the centre of the SHARK is BYD’s DMO, or Dual Mode Off-road, plug-in hybrid architecture. Rather than replacing the conventional pick-up formula with a purely electric platform, BYD combines electric drive with a turbocharged petrol engine to provide flexibility across different driving conditions.
The powertrain uses two electric motors. The front motor produces 231 PS and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear motor contributes 204 PS and 340 Nm. Combined system output reaches 436 PS and 650 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in a claimed 5.7 seconds.
Energy is stored in a 32.2 kWh BYD Blade Battery, integrated into the vehicle’s ladder-frame platform using Cell-to-Chassis technology. The battery works alongside a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with BYD quoting an electric-only driving range of up to 90 kilometres and a combined range of approximately 675 kilometres on a full charge and full tank.
The architecture reflects a broader shift in how manufacturers are approaching electrified utility vehicles. Instead of treating electrification as an alternative to long-distance usability, the SHARK seeks to combine electric driving for shorter journeys with the flexibility of a combustion engine when travelling farther afield.
For tradespeople, outdoor enthusiasts and households that require a versatile vehicle, that combination may prove as important as outright performance.
## A Working Vehicle With a Modern Cabin
The SHARK’s safety result arrives alongside a substantial equipment package. The double-cab layout accommodates five occupants, while the cabin includes heated and ventilated front seats, vegan-leather upholstery and a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument display is paired with a head-up display, while a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen provides navigation, voice-assistant functionality and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors also support manoeuvring in tighter spaces.
Beyond passenger comfort, the vehicle includes Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing compatible electrical equipment to draw power from the vehicle. That capability has practical applications at work sites, campsites and other locations where conventional power outlets may not be readily available.
The SHARK’s broader safety equipment includes multiple airbags, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, collision warnings and emergency lane-keeping assistance, with the precise specification dependent on the market.
## A Strategic Milestone for BYD
The five-star rating is the ninth such result BYD says it has achieved since entering Europe’s passenger-car market in 2022. It follows successful assessments of models including the DOLPHIN SURF, DOLPHIN, SEAL, SEAL U DM-i and SEALION 7.
The SHARK’s entry into the UK market also signals the manufacturer’s intention to expand beyond conventional passenger cars and into a segment where buyers often expect a demanding combination of durability, practicality and safety.
In the UK, BYD lists the SHARK DMO from £47,295 including VAT. That price is specific to the British market and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
For BYD, the challenge now is to translate a strong safety result and an ambitious technical specification into lasting credibility among pick-up buyers. A five-star rating is an important endorsement, but it forms only one part of the decision: real-world efficiency, payload and towing requirements, service support, durability and long-term ownership costs will also determine how successfully the SHARK establishes itself.
Nevertheless, the achievement marks a meaningful moment for an increasingly competitive category. The modern pick-up is evolving, and the SHARK demonstrates how electrified propulsion and contemporary safety technology can be integrated into a vehicle that retains a clear working purpose.

Editorial note: For a balanced article, I recommend retaining the detail about the side-curtain airbag. Euro NCAP reported that it did not deploy correctly during the side-impact assessment, applied a scoring penalty and noted that BYD was working on an updated airbag cover. Including that finding adds important context to the five-star result.
