BMW Group Begins Series Production of Gen6 High-Voltage Batteries in Shenyang

A new chapter in BMW’s electric ambitions takes shape in China, as the manufacturer expands its global battery production network to support the next generation of Neue Klasse vehicles.

The future of electric mobility is being built one component at a time, and for the BMW Group, the latest milestone comes from Shenyang, China. On 15 October 2026, the company announced the start of series production of its sixth-generation (Gen6) high-voltage batteries at the site, marking the third location in its expanding global manufacturing network dedicated to the technology.

The development represents an important step in the industrialisation of BMW’s next-generation battery systems, which will serve as the energy core of future all-electric Neue Klasse models produced in China.

Following production locations in Debrecen, Hungary, and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany, Shenyang extends the company’s ability to manufacture its latest battery technology closer to the factories building the vehicles themselves.

A new generation of battery technology

At the centre of the Gen6 system is a newly developed cylindrical battery cell. Compared with the previous cell generation, BMW states that the new cells offer more than 20 per cent higher energy density, while charging speed and range increase by up to 30 per cent.

These improvements are supported by a revised battery architecture designed to use available space more efficiently.

The Gen6 system adopts a cell-to-pack concept, integrating cylindrical cells directly into the battery housing and eliminating the conventional module level. By removing this intermediate stage, BMW can make more efficient use of the installation space while allowing the battery to be integrated flexibly into different vehicle models.

The result is a battery system designed around the requirements of the Neue Klasse, BMW’s next generation of all-electric vehicles.

The Energy Master: control at the heart of the battery

Another important element of the Gen6 architecture is the Energy Master, a central control unit developed by the BMW Group.

Positioned directly on the high-voltage battery, the Energy Master consolidates essential power-supply and battery-management functions. Its integration forms part of BMW’s wider approach to developing the battery as a coordinated system rather than simply a collection of individual cells.

The battery’s performance therefore depends not only on the characteristics of its cylindrical cells, but also on the architecture that connects, controls and manages them.

Manufacturing closer to the market

The start of production in Shenyang reflects BMW’s local-for-local manufacturing strategy: producing key technologies close to the markets and vehicle plants they serve.

By manufacturing high-voltage batteries in China for future Neue Klasse models built there, BMW aims to shorten transportation routes, support a stable supply of components and strengthen the resilience of its production network.

Shenyang’s addition also forms part of a broader global expansion. BMW identifies Woodruff in the United States and San Luis Potosí in Mexico as further battery assembly locations scheduled to begin series production in the coming months.

Across these locations, the company intends to maintain uniform production, quality and safety standards while drawing on the regional manufacturing and supplier expertise available at each site.

The strategy combines local industrial capability with a common global framework, allowing BMW to expand production without treating each facility as an isolated operation.

Precision engineering, supported by digital quality control

The Gen6 battery production process combines specialised assembly techniques with digital monitoring throughout manufacturing.

Battery cells are inspected before being joined with cooling units to create cell clusters. Following laser cleaning, the clusters and cell contact system are precision-welded together. A specialised foaming process then bonds the components into a single mechanical unit, contributing to the battery’s safety, stability and longevity.

The housing is subsequently closed, sealed and riveted. The Energy Master is installed during the final assembly stage, after which every battery undergoes a comprehensive end-of-line test.

Digital quality assurance operates throughout this process. Production data is captured and analysed at each stage, while digital twins, data analytics and AI-supported inspection methods help identify deviations early and maintain traceability.

Inline inspection systems also monitor laser-welded joints in real time. BMW states that every completed high-voltage battery receives comprehensive testing for quality, safety and functionality.

These processes are particularly important as the company moves its next-generation technology into series production across multiple manufacturing locations.

Supporting the Neue Klasse

The introduction of Gen6 battery production in Shenyang is ultimately tied to BMW’s wider Neue Klasse programme. The new battery generation is intended to provide the energy storage and management foundation for the next phase of the company’s all-electric vehicle portfolio.

For BMW, the milestone is not simply about introducing a different cell format. It brings together battery design, packaging, electronic control, manufacturing precision and digital quality assurance within a production system intended to operate across several global markets.

As the network expands, the ability to manufacture batteries close to vehicle assembly plants will remain a central element of the company’s approach.

The start of series production in Shenyang therefore marks a significant step in turning Gen6 from a technological development into an industrial reality.

With more than 20 per cent higher energy density in its new cylindrical cells and charging speed and range improvements of up to 30 per cent, BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology establishes the foundation for its forthcoming Neue Klasse models.

The next stage will be its continued expansion across the global production network—and its integration into the vehicles that will bring the technology to customers.
