The Stars and Stripes Return: Ken Read to Lead Last-Minute US America’s Cup Charge

For months, it appeared the 38th America’s Cup in Naples would be a historic anomaly: a competition without an American boat. That changed this week. In a dramatic “11th-hour” entry just before the March 31st deadline, American Racing Challenger Team USA has been confirmed as an official challenger, bringing the United States back into the world’s most prestigious sailing arena.

The Leadership: A Legend Resigns

To spearhead this high-stakes campaign, the team has tapped a titan of the sport. Ken Read, 64, has resigned from his prestigious role as President of North Sails a position he held since 2013 to serve as CEO.

Read is no stranger to the “Auld Mug,” having served as helmsman for Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes campaigns in 2000 and 2003. His appointment instantly elevates the project from a late-stage entry to a serious sporting endeavor.

“Everything was preparing me for this role,” Read noted, emphasizing that the new sustainable partnership structure of the Cup is what ultimately lured him back to the front lines.

The Strategy: A “Strategic Acquisition”

While the team name is new, the hardware is battle-tested. American Racing has executed a strategic acquisition of the assets from the now-defunct American Magic program. This includes:

  • Patriot: The AC75 yacht that served as American Magic’s primary racing platform.
  • Two AC40s: Used for testing and training.
  • Pensacola Base: The team will continue to use the purpose-built training facility in Florida.

By purchasing existing assets rather than starting a design cycle from zero, the team has bypassed the one thing money cannot buy: time.

The Mission: Building a Pathway

Backed by entrepreneurs Karel Komárek and Chris Welch, and representing Sail Newport, the team is positioning itself as more than just a racing syndicate. Read has made it clear that the goal is to create a legitimate “pathway” for young American sailors.

  • Focus on Youth: The team intends to build a primarily American crew, leveraging emerging talent and Olympic connections.
  • Inclusivity: Working alongside US Sailing, the initiative aims to expand opportunities for female and youth sailors.

The Race Against the Clock

Despite the jumpstart provided by the acquired assets, the road to Naples 2027 is steep.

  • Technical Overhaul: Patriot must be optimized to meet the latest class rules by Fall 2026.
  • Crew Assembly: The team has received a dispensation to skip the first preliminary regatta in Cagliari, Sardinia this May, as they do not yet have a full sailing roster.
  • Flight Time: They face the monumental task of matching the “flight time” and data-log of established giants like Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.
