The NamX HUV: Solving Hydrogen’s “Chicken and Egg” Problem

For decades, the hydrogen car has been a “tomorrow” technology because of the lack of refueling stations. You can’t buy the car because there are no stations; there are no stations because no one owns the car. The NamX HUV intends to break that cycle by treating hydrogen like a propane tank for your BBQ.

The Innovation: The CapX System

The HUV features a patented “removable capsule” system at the rear. Behind a transparent glass pane (a signature Pininfarina touch), the car holds six hydrogen capsules.

  • Dual Tank Logic: The HUV has one fixed internal tank for your primary range, but the six “CapX” bottles act as modular range extenders.
  • The Swap: Instead of searching for a high-pressure pump, you simply swap the 0.5kg bottles at a “CapXtore” (likely located at supermarkets or luxury hubs) or have them delivered directly to your home.
  • Total Range: Combined, the system provides roughly 800 km (500 miles) of range.

The 2026 Pivot: From Fuel Cells to V8s

In a move that shocked the EV-leaning industry, NamX recently announced it would ditch the traditional Fuel Cell (FCEV) for its inaugural run in favor of a Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE).

  • The Engine: A 6.2-liter V8 supplied by Solution F.
  • The Logic: Hydrogen combustion engines are more robust, can handle lower-purity (cheaper) hydrogen, and crucially for luxury buyers they maintain the mechanical soul and sound of a traditional performance vehicle.
  • Performance: The top-tier “GTH” version targets 550 hp, a 0–100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of 250 km/h.

The Design: Pininfarina’s “X” Motif

Visually, the HUV is a masterclass in “High-Tech Muscle.” The front grille and lighting signature form a massive “X,” while the silhouette is a “Coupe-SUV” that manages to look aerodynamic without losing its rugged stance. The rear, however, is the star the exposed hydrogen capsules are presented like jewels in a watch face, magnifying the engineering rather than hiding it.
