Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC Named German Premium Car of the Year 2027
A new chapter for Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling SUV line, combining electric mobility, long-distance comfort and advanced digital technology.
Mercedes-Benz has added another milestone to its electric vehicle ambitions, with the all-new electric GLC named German Premium Car of the Year 2027. Announced on September 22, 2026, the award recognises the model’s balanced overall package, comfortable driving character and the qualities that have helped establish the GLC as one of the brand’s most successful vehicles worldwide.
Presented by the German Car of the Year Awards (GCOTY) jury at the National Automobile Museum – The Loh Collection, the award highlights Mercedes-Benz’s effort to carry the GLC’s established strengths into the electric era without losing sight of what customers expect from a premium SUV.
An Electric SUV Built Around Everyday Usability
The electric GLC has been developed around a combination of practicality, comfort and contemporary design. Rather than focusing exclusively on electrification, Mercedes-Benz has emphasised the broader ownership experience, with generous interior space, long-distance comfort and intuitive technology intended to make everyday journeys easier.
Its exterior introduces a distinctive design language for the electric model, while the cabin places digital integration and passenger comfort at the centre of the experience. The result is an SUV designed to accommodate daily commuting, family duties and longer journeys within a premium environment.
Practicality extends beyond passenger space. The electric GLC features a 128-litre front storage compartment, or frunk, and offers a towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes. These details reinforce its intended versatility, allowing the vehicle to serve drivers who need more than a comfortable urban runabout.
Comfort Meets Agility
Mercedes-Benz has also placed considerable emphasis on the GLC’s driving dynamics. Optional AIRMATIC intelligent air suspension is designed to enhance ride comfort, while optional rear-axle steering, with a steering angle of up to 4.5 degrees, helps improve agility and manoeuvrability.
Together, these systems are intended to make the SUV more composed on longer journeys while remaining manageable in tighter spaces. This balance between refinement and everyday usability was central to the GCOTY jury’s recognition of the vehicle.
A Digital Interior Designed Around the Driver
Technology is another defining element of the electric GLC. Buyers can specify the immersive MBUX Hyperscreen, measuring 99.3 centimetres diagonally and described by Mercedes-Benz as the largest display it has offered.
The screen is powered by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, MB.OS, which integrates infotainment, comfort functions, charging and driver assistance into a connected digital environment. Over-the-air updates delivered through the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud are designed to keep the vehicle’s software current.
Driver assistance technology is grouped under the MB.DRIVE umbrella. According to Mercedes-Benz, standard equipment includes DISTRONIC distance assistance and a parking assistant. Optional packages extend the available functionality to SAE Level 2 assisted driving and a 360-degree camera view for parking.
These systems reflect the manufacturer’s broader focus on integrating vehicle software and driver assistance into the premium driving experience, while providing a more intuitive way to access essential functions.
Continuing the GLC’s Success Story
The GLC has long been an important model in Mercedes-Benz’s global lineup, and the electric version represents an effort to translate that success into a changing automotive market.
The GCOTY jury brings together German automotive journalists, experienced content creators and international jurors. Its members evaluate new vehicles available on the European market, considering both their individual categories and their performance in an overall comparison.
The electric GLC’s selection as German Premium Car of the Year 2027 therefore places the model among the standout premium vehicles assessed by the organisation.
For Mercedes-Benz, the award also arrives during its 140 Years of Innovation anniversary year, marking the company’s historical roots in the invention of the automobile and its continuing investment in new mobility technologies.
The Next Phase of the Electric GLC
The new electric GLC illustrates how Mercedes-Benz is approaching electrification: not simply as a change in propulsion, but as an opportunity to combine familiar premium attributes with new digital capabilities and everyday versatility.
With optional air suspension and rear-axle steering, a spacious cabin, substantial towing capability and an extensive connected technology offering, the model has been developed to serve a broad range of driving needs.
Its German Premium Car of the Year 2027 title provides a significant endorsement of that approach. The next challenge will be translating the jury’s recognition into lasting appeal among customers looking for an electric SUV that delivers comfort, technology and practicality alongside the expectations associated with the three-pointed star.
