The “Audi Revolut” era has hit an unexpected speed bump just two races into the 2026 season, as Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley departs the organization with immediate effect.
A Sudden Exit
The announcement comes as a surprise to the paddock, given that Wheatley—a former Red Bull stalwart—only stepped into the team boss role last April during the Kick Sauber transition. After spearheading Audi’s official entry into the sport as a full works effort over the winter, Wheatley is stepping down citing “personal reasons”.
During his brief but impactful tenure, Wheatley was credited with:
- Lifting the team off the bottom of the standings during the Sauber transition.
- Securing a maiden podium for Nico Hülkenberg at Silverstone.
- Managing the debut points finish for Audi’s first-ever race as a power unit and chassis manufacturer.
The Binotto Era Expands
In the wake of the departure, Mattia Binotto, the Head of Audi’s F1 Project, will expand his remit to include Team Principal responsibilities. Binotto, who joined the project in 2024, has been the architect of Audi’s transformation into a factory team.
The team stated that a permanent future structure will be defined at a later stage as the organization adapts to the “evolving environment” of the new 2026 regulations.
A Storied Career Paused
Wheatley’s exit marks a pause in one of the most successful technical careers in the pit lane. Starting at Benetton in the early 90s, he became a pillar of the Red Bull Racing dynasty, contributing to six Constructors’ and seven Drivers’ championships as Sporting Director before making the jump to lead Audi.
Despite the leadership shakeup, Audi maintains its “unwavering commitment” to the grid, with a stated goal of challenging for World Championships by 2030.
