Ferrari on the Barcelona Podium: The 499P Takes Third as Toyota Secures the World Title
—
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya delivered a defining moment in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, but it was Toyota Racing that left Spain with the greatest prize. A one-two finish at the inaugural 6 Hours of Barcelona secured Toyota the manufacturers’ world championship, while Ferrari AF Corse salvaged a podium finish with its number 50 Ferrari 499P.
For Ferrari, the result was a reminder of the demands of endurance racing. Speed over a single lap is only one part of the equation; six hours of changing conditions, tyre management, strategy and consistent execution determine where a car ultimately finishes.
The number 50 entry, driven by Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, completed 198 laps to finish third. The crew crossed the line in 6:02:00.631, 39.725 seconds behind the winning Toyota number 8. Ferrari’s number 83 privateer entry also finished inside the top five, giving the 499P programme two cars among the leading finishers.
## Toyota Takes Control
The number 8 Toyota TR010 Hybrid, shared by Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa, took victory after leading the race from the opening hour. The number 7 Toyota, driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries, followed just 0.583 seconds behind its sister car after six hours of racing.
The closeness of the final margin between the two Toyotas contrasted with the gap to Ferrari. Nevertheless, Toyota’s result was decisive in the championship: its one-two finish clinched the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship manufacturers’ title, marking another major achievement for the Japanese manufacturer in the Hypercar era.
The race also represented the first time the FIA WEC had visited Barcelona for a championship event. The circuit’s combination of long straights, flowing corners and technical sections offered a new challenge for the Hypercar field, testing aerodynamic efficiency and the ability to maintain performance across a full race distance.
## Ferrari’s Number 50 Secures Third
Ferrari’s strongest result came from the number 50 499P. Fuoco, Molina and Nielsen completed the distance in third place, maintaining Ferrari’s presence on the podium in a race where Toyota ultimately held the advantage.
The number 83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P, driven by Yifei Ye, Robert Kubica and Philip Hanson, finished fifth, 53.353 seconds behind the winner. The result placed a second Ferrari among the top five, demonstrating the competitiveness of the wider 499P effort even as the factory-backed number 50 took the higher finishing position.
The number 51 Ferrari, shared by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi, finished 15th after completing 195 laps. It was classified three laps down, a result that left the sister factory car well outside the leading group.
The contrast between the three Ferrari entries illustrates the unforgiving nature of endurance competition. A strong result from one car cannot fully compensate for a less competitive finish from another when every point matters in the championship.
## Rain Adds Another Variable
Barcelona’s race began in wet conditions, with the field starting behind the Safety Car because of the slippery track. The changing conditions added another layer to the teams’ decisions over tyre choice, pace and race management.
In endurance racing, the challenge extends beyond outright lap time. Teams must balance the risks of pushing in difficult conditions against the need to protect the car, preserve tyres and avoid costly incidents. Every pit stop and stint becomes part of a larger calculation, particularly when weather can alter the balance of performance.
Toyota managed the conditions to secure the top two positions, while Ferrari’s number 50 remained in contention for a podium. The final classification showed the number 8 Toyota recording a fastest lap of 1:32.420, with the number 7 Toyota setting a marginally quicker 1:32.379.
## The Championship Picture
The Barcelona result had consequences beyond the podium. Toyota’s victory secured the manufacturers’ championship with one round remaining, giving the team an early conclusion to the principal title battle.
For Ferrari, the focus now shifts to the final round at Monza. The Italian venue offers the 499P team an opportunity to close the season on home ground and assess the lessons from a campaign that has tested the cars, drivers and teams across a varied calendar.
Ferrari’s endurance programme is built around more than outright pace. The 499P must combine reliability, driver consistency, strategic judgement and the ability to respond to changing conditions. Barcelona showed that Ferrari could still reach the podium, but also how difficult it can be to overturn a Toyota advantage once it has established control.
## Looking Ahead to Monza
The 6 Hours of Barcelona was a landmark event for the FIA WEC and a championship-clinching weekend for Toyota. Ferrari left with third place for the number 50 car and fifth for the number 83, but the result also provided a clear measure of the challenge facing the Italian marque.
With Monza next, Ferrari will have one final opportunity in the 2026 season to turn its pace and endurance experience into another major result. The home race will carry particular significance for the team, its drivers and supporters.
Barcelona belonged to Toyota in the championship standings. Ferrari’s task now is to respond on the track.
