BUDAPEST — High drama, technical rebirth, and late-night stewards’ intervention defined a chaotic Saturday qualifying at the Hungaroring. While McLaren’s Lando Norris locked down P1 in a sensational final Q3 effort, the afternoon’s spotlight was shared equally between Adrian Newey’s newly unleashed Aston Martin “B-spec” challenger and a costly grid penalty for Lewis Hamilton.
Newey’s AMR B-Spec Shows Signs of Life
All eyes in the paddock were fixed on Aston Martin as they finally debuted their heavily revised B-spec AMR26—the first major design overhaul shaped under the technical guidance of Adrian Newey.
After months of grueling effort at Silverstone, the radical aerodynamic redesign showed real signs of fruition on track. Managing the car through all three rounds of qualifying, veteran driver Fernando Alonso piloted the upgraded chassis to P16. While the headline position doesn’t scream instant podium threat, the underlying correlation metrics and corner-entry stability provided the team with their most encouraging baseline of the season.
“The car feels much more glued to the ground and far more predictable,” Alonso noted, affirming that Newey’s long-term philosophy is starting to take root. “We are starting far back, but this is a genuine step in the right direction.”
Norris Masterclass vs. Hamilton’s Turn 1 Demotion
At the front of the grid, Lando Norris put on a qualifying masterclass, setting a blistering pace to secure P1 for Sunday’s race. Norris executed a flawless final flying lap, navigating Budapest’s tight, twisty sectors with absolute surgical precision.
However, the post-session order saw a dramatic shake-up courtesy of the FIA Stewards.
Lewis Hamilton initially put his Ferrari on the front row alongside Norris after a stellar performance in Q3. But an incident late in the session at 16:59 local time brought Car #44 under heavy scrutiny. Entering Turn 1, Hamilton was travelling slowly on the racing line, inadvertently impeding a flying Oscar Piastri in Car #81.
After reviewing telemetry and video evidence, the stewards ruled that Car #44 had unnecessarily impeded Car #81, handing Hamilton a 3-place grid penalty.
