The wait is over The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially warped into theaters this week! Jack Black is indeed back as Bowser, and he’s been making headlines on the press tour with his usual high-energy antics (including some improvised songs that have already gone viral).

Here is everything we know about the sequel that’s currently taking the box office by storm.
Plot: A Galactic Rescue Mission
Picking up after the events of the first film, the story shifts from the Mushroom Kingdom to the cosmos.
- The Threat: Bowser remains small and imprisoned at the start, but the real trouble begins with Bowser Jr. (voiced by Benny Safdie), who is determined to free his father and take revenge on the Mario Bros.
- The Mission: Mario and Luigi must team up with a new ally, Princess Rosalina, to stop Bowser Jr.’s “warmongering” plans.
- The Twist: A major plot point reveals a secret connection between Princess Peach and Rosalina, explaining their history and how they were separated as children.
- The Sidekick: This film finally introduces Yoshi (voiced by Donald Glover), who joins the brothers as their loyal sidekick.
The Star-Studded Cast
The original crew returns, joined by some massive new names:
- Jack Black as Bowser, Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi

- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach

- Donald Glover as Yoshi (The “voice of the tour” right now!)

- Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina
- Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
- Glen Powell as Fox McCloud (Yes, a Star Fox cameo!)

Production & Release Details
- Release Date: The movie premiered in the US on April 1, 2026.
- Studio: Once again produced by Illumination in partnership with Nintendo.
- Reception: While critics have given it mixed reviews (some calling it a bit “overstuffed” with references), it’s a massive commercial hit, already breaking opening day records with over $34 million domestically.
What’s Next? (The 2029 Tease)
During the current campaign tour, Jack Black jokingly (or maybe not?) suggested that a third Mario movie could arrive in 2029.

With Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda slated for 2027 and rumors of a Donkey Kong spin-off for 2028, it looks like we’re entering a full-blown “Nintendo Cinematic Universe.”
Quick Tip: If you’re heading to the theater, keep your eyes peeled during the credits. Between the Star Fox appearance and the heavy focus on the Lumas, the “Easter Egg” count in this movie is significantly higher than the first one.
