Twenty-two years after Mia Thermopolis famously chose to rule Genovia rather than abdicate for love, the crown is calling once again. While a third installment in The Princess Diaries franchise has hovered in the realm of cinematic myth for nearly two decades, recent confirmations from Disney, the cast, and the franchise’s creator show that production is finally gaining real-world momentum.

However, translating royal duties back to the big screen is taking some time. The script is being meticulously adjusted, and the return to Genovia is shaping up to look vastly different than it did in the early 2000s.
The Plot: Moving Beyond “Princess Wish-Fulfillment”
The most significant creative update comes from director Adele Lim (Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians), who officially signed on to helm the project. Lim recently highlighted a distinct shift in tone and narrative scope for the threequel, noting that the focus has evolved alongside the original audience.

“When I looked at the series and talked about it with Anne, there are so many wish-fulfillment movies for princesses and there are not any wish-fulfillment movies for queens and that’s what we want to see.” Adele Lim
Rather than a young woman discovering her royal heritage or scrambling to find a husband to keep her title, The Princess Diaries 3 will explore the realities, politics, and high-stakes complexities of Mia actually ruling Genovia as Queen.

The story is also expected to pass the torch to a new generation. An open casting call was issued for the role of Olivia Robinson, a sharp, sarcastic 15-year-old girl who finds herself thrust into the royal spotlight. This aligns heavily with franchise author Meg Cabot’s 2015 spin-off novel, The Princess Diaries, Volume XI: Royal Wedding, which introduced Mia’s long-lost half-sister.
The Cast: A Massive, Complicated Reunion
The logistics of gathering the original cast have proven to be the film’s biggest hurdle, but according to Meg Cabot, the script has been designed with a specific goal in mind: “There is a part for everybody, because there’s a thing that happens where everyone has to show up.”

While Anne Hathaway is officially attached and has stated she is “one hundred percent constantly working” on perfecting the script, her packed Hollywood schedule has delayed the cameras from rolling. Hathaway is currently juggling a massive slate of projects, including Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Verity, meaning her window of availability is incredibly tight.

Furthermore, Cabot’s confirmation that both Chris Pine and Robert Schwartzman (Mia’s high school sweetheart) are written into the script suggests that Mia’s romantic past and present will clash, bringing a long-standing fan debate back to the forefront.
Production Status: Castle Shopping and Filming Timelines
Despite rumors of a 2025 shoot, principal photography has not yet begun. However, physical infrastructure is already waiting.
The crew conducted location scouting across Europe with the production team literally “castle shopping” in regions like the Czech Republic. Cabot revealed that a specific European castle has already been officially rented by the studio and is currently sitting vacant, waiting for Hathaway’s schedule to clear and the script to be finalized.
When to Expect a Trailer
Because the film remains in pre-production and has not shot a single frame of footage, there is currently no official trailer or teaser available. Any trailers circulating on social media platform feeds are fan-made concepts utilizing older footage and deepfake tech.
Given the current script development phase and Hathaway’s filming pipeline, production is unlikely to begin until late this year or early next. A typical Disney blockbuster requires a multi-month shoot followed by extensive post-production. Realistically, audiences should not expect an official teaser trailer until mid-to-late 2027, with a theatrical release following in late 2027 or early 2028.
