Bugatti: Caroline Garden, a gaze back to Paris.

The W16 Mistral is already a monument to automotive history, representing the final open-top act for Bugatti’s legendary 8.0-liter quad-turbo engine. But with the unveiling of the W16 Mistral ‘Caroline,’ the Molsheim-based marque has proven that even a 1,600 PS beast can be transformed into a delicate, poetic masterpiece.

Commissioned through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure (bespoke) program, ‘Caroline’ is more than just a car; it is a deeply personal tribute from a father to his daughter. It blurs the lines between heavy-duty engineering and the ethereal grace of Haute Couture.

A Living Exterior: The Bloom of Lavender

The most striking element of ‘Caroline’ is its bespoke Lavender finish. Far from a static color, the paintwork was developed through dozens of samples to ensure it mimics the shifting light of a garden in bloom. Under the sun, the surface oscillates between cool bluish tones and warm, reddish violets, following the car’s sculptural curves like a dance of light and shadow.

Grounding this airy aesthetic is the lower body, finished in exposed Violet Carbon. The dark, tinted weave provides a technical contrast to the pearlescent Lavender, reminding onlookers that beneath the beauty lies a machine capable of 420 km/h.

The Rear Wing: A Canvas in the Wind

One of the most intricate details is reserved for the retractable rear wing. Often a purely functional aerodynamic tool, Bugatti’s artisans have turned it into a hand-painted canvas.

When the air brake deploys, it reveals a meticulous floral composition of lilacs and irises. At the center of this bouquet, the name ‘Caroline’ is inscribed in Bugatti’s signature script a permanent anchor for the car’s emotional narrative. This level of detail required a painstaking masking and layering process that took weeks to perfect.

The Interior: A Serene Sanctuary

Stepping inside the cockpit feels like entering a high-fashion atelier. The cabin is wrapped in a harmonious blend of Blanc (white) and Minuit (dark blue/purple) leather.

The floral theme continues with thousands of hand-stitched threads creating mirrored motifs on the headrests. On the door panels, the embroidery takes on a kinetic quality; the petals appear to be drifting and flowing as if carried by the wind a nod to the ‘Mistral’ name itself, which refers to the powerful wind of southern France.

Even the gear selector pays homage to the brand’s artistic roots, housing Rembrandt Bugatti’s iconic ‘Dancing Elephant’ figurine, encased in glass tinted to match the surrounding violet palette.

The Ultimate Expression of Sur Mesure

The W16 Mistral ‘Caroline’ stands as a testament to what is possible when a client’s personal story meets Bugatti’s savoir-faire. As Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director of Bugatti, noted, the project was a journey of “trust, collaboration, and a shared pursuit of perfection.”

In the transition from the W16 era to a new electrified future, ‘Caroline’ serves as a graceful reminder that at the pinnacle of luxury, cars aren’t just about speed they are about the enduring power of emotion.
