FIA Fast-Tracks Emergency Power Unit Changes for Miami

The 2026 season has kicked off with a seismic shift in the hierarchy, fueled by the debut of the new power unit regulations and a major “youthquake” on the grid. As we head into the Miami Grand Prix (May 3rd), here is the state of play:

The Standings: Mercedes Dominance & A New Star

Mercedes has mastered the initial 50/50 hybrid split better than anyone, leading the Constructors’ Championship with 135 points.

  • Kimi. A is the story of the year. Following his back-to-back victory in Suzuka, the rookie sensation currently leads the Drivers’ Championship (72 points), ahead of teammate George Russell 63.
  • Ferrari sits second, with C. Leclerc and L. Hamilton (in his second season with the Scuderia) keeping the Silver Arrows in their sights.
  • Red Bull has struggled significantly with the transition to their Red Bull-Ford power unit; M. Verstappen currently sits a shocking 9th in the standings with only 12 points.

Technical & Safety Crisis: “The Bearman Crash”

The Japanese Grand Prix was overshadowed by a high-speed accident involving O. Bearman (Haas). The crash highlighted a dangerous “speed differential” issue: cars that have depleted their battery energy (harvesting) are significantly slower on straights than those on full deployment.

The FIA Response (Effective for Miami):

Following emergency meetings in mid-April, several regulation “refinements” have been fast-tracked:

  • Super Clipping: The maximum “super clip” power has been increased from 250 KW to 350 KW to reduce the time cars spend harvesting.
  • Harvesting Limit: The maximum energy recovery per lap has been reduced from 8 MJ to 7 MJ to discourage excessive “lift and coast” tactics.
  • Low Power Start Detection: A new system to automatically trigger MGU-K deployment if a car has a slow start, preventing dangerous rear-end collisions.

Driver Market & Team Movements

  • M. Verstappen: Speculation is reaching a fever pitch regarding his future at Red Bull. With his race engineer departing and the car’s performance lacking, Verstappen has notably refused to rule out a sabbatical or a shock move for 2027.
  • The New Entrants: Audi (having fully integrated Sauber) and Cadillac (powering Haas and their own entry) are finding the learning curve steep. Audi has managed only 2 points via G.Bortoleto, while Cadillac is still searching for its first point.
  • Alpine: Now a Mercedes customer team, Alpine is showing mid-field strength, though the team has recently had to defend F. Colapinto and E.Ocon from social media abuse following a string of on-track incidents.

Upcoming: Miami Grand Prix

All eyes are on McLaren this weekend. Despite a “disastrous” start to the seasonโ€”including double electrical failures in China they showed recovery in Japan with Oscar Piastriโ€™s podium. They are expected to bring a massive “B-spec” aerodynamic package to Miami to bridge the gap to Mercedes.
