The Void of Luxury: Is Lazzarini’s “The Shape” Moving from Concept to Construction?

While The Shape has captured the world’s imagination with its “gaping abyss,” there is currently no confirmed shipyard contract for its construction as of mid-2026.

Like many of Lazzarini’s more avant-garde designs (such as the Avanguardia swan), The Shape remains in the “concept for sale” phase. This means the engineering and design are ready, but the project is essentially waiting for a private buyer with roughly $80 million to $100 million to commission the build.

The Current Status of the Project

  • The Design Intent: Pierpaolo Lazzarini developed this 69-meter (226-foot) vessel specifically to disrupt traditional silhouettes. The “hole deck” is the structural centerpiece, intended to be a customizable open-air lounge that puts passengers right at the water’s surface.
  • The Build Feasibility: Lazzarini has noted that while the design looks impossible, it is technically buildable using a reinforced steel hull and a carbon fiber superstructure to maintain the rigidity needed to support the “empty” center.
  • Sustainability Updates: As of 2026, the technical specs have been updated to emphasize a hydrogen propulsion system and a “solar-skin” roof, aligning it with the growing trend of zero-emission superyachts.

Why It Hasn’t Been Built Yet

The primary hurdle for a vessel like The Shape isn’t just the price tag; it’s the interior volume trade-off. Because the center of the boat is a literal hole, the living quarters are pushed to the bow and stern. This creates a unique layout but offers less square footage for cabins than a traditional 70-meter yacht would provide.
