Pangeos and the Dawn of the Terayacht

In the world of ultra-luxury naval architecture, we have seen superyachts, gigayachts, and even exploratory vessels that resemble floating fortresses. But the Italian design house Lazzarini Design Studio has officially moved the goalposts into a new category: the Terayacht. Find out more.

Named Pangeos a nod to the prehistoric supercontinent Pangea this $8 billion turtle-shaped vessel is less of a boat and more of a wandering sovereign state.

The Vision: A Floating City-State

Pangeos is designed to be the largest floating structure ever built, measuring 550 meters (1,800 feet) in length and stretching to 610 meters (2,000 feet) at its widest point (the wings). To put that into perspective, it is roughly twice the size of the Roman Colosseum.+1

The statistics behind the “Turtle” are staggering:

  • Capacity: Built to house up to 60,000 residents.
  • Power: Driven by nine HTS (High-Temperature Superconductor) electric engines, each generating 16,800 horsepower.
  • Sustainability: The rooftop is a massive solar array, while the “wings” are designed to harness wave energy, allowing the vessel to cruise perpetually at 5 knots without emissions.

Inside, the structure is divided into blocks featuring luxury villas, apartments, shopping malls, beach clubs, and even dedicated ports for smaller ships and aircraft.

Where is Pangeos? The “Terashipyard” in Saudi Arabia

A vessel of this magnitude cannot be built in a standard dry dock. Lazzarini has proposed Saudi Arabia as the primary location for its construction. Specifically, the designers have identified a site near King Abdullah Port, about 80 miles north of Jeddah, as the ideal “scenario configuration.”+1 Find out more.

The project requires the creation of a “Terashipyard” a specialized circular dam that would involve dredging one square kilometer of the sea. Once the hull is completed, the dam would be flooded to levitate the structure and launch it into the Red Sea.+1

What’s Happened Since the Launch?

Since the concept was first unveiled in late 2022, the project has moved from a viral design aesthetic into a complex crowdfunding and engineering phase.

  • The NFT Crowdfunding Initiative: To bridge the gap between “concept” and “construction,” Lazzarini launched a crowdfunding campaign using Unreal Estate NFTs. Investors can purchase virtual spaces from simple entrance tickets to royal palaces which serve as a deposit and exclusive rights to the physical property should the ship be built.
  • Engineering Validations: As of 2026, the studio has continued to refine the “unsinkable” steel hull design, which consists of 30,000 cluster compartments. Find out more.
  • Timeline to Reality: Current projections suggest that if funding and logistical hurdles in Saudi Arabia are cleared, construction could begin as early as 2033, with a projected build time of roughly eight years.

The Verdict

While skeptics call it a “fever dream of CAD software,” the momentum behind Saudi Arabia’s other gigaprojects (like NEOM and The Line) suggests there is a growing appetite for architectural “impossible” feats in the region. Pangeos isn’t just a yacht; it’s a test of whether humanity is ready to live permanently on the water.
