Roots at Sea: Inside Sanlorenzo’s 73m ‘Virtuosity’ and its Living Forest

In the ultra-competitive landscape of 70-meter+ superyachts, innovation is often measured in sheer volume or speed. However, with the launch of the second 74Steel, christened Virtuosity, Sanlorenzo has shifted the conversation toward “experiential architecture.” The 73-meter flagship, unveiled this week, marks a historic first in the industry: a yacht designed not around a deck plan, but around a living, breathing Ficus Nitida tree.

The Living Core

The central design element of Virtuosity is a 16-square-meter oval void that slices vertically through the Main and Bridge decks. At its heart stands the Ficus selected by the owner years before construction began.

  • Integrated Ecosystem: This is not a “potted plant” addition. Sanlorenzo’s engineers integrated automated irrigation and environmental control systems directly into the hull’s core structure to ensure the tree thrives at sea.
  • Natural Lighting: To support growth, the shipyard installed floor-level lateral skylights that channel natural light downward, creating a sun-drenched, “winter garden” atmosphere that physically connects the vertical levels of the yacht.

The ‘Aquarium’ and Ocean Resort

Beyond the arboretum, Virtuosity pushes the “strictly business” approach to wellness and entertainment:

  • Submerged Perspective: The wellness area features the “Aquarium” a partially submerged lounge with reinforced glazing carved into the hull, allowing guests to view marine life below the waterline.
  • Expanded Beach Club: The “Ocean Resort” has been expanded to a staggering 230 square meters (40% larger than its predecessor, Silver Fox). By day, it serves as a tiered lounge with a glass-bottom pool; by night, a permanent DJ booth transforms the space into an elite over-water club.

Technical Precision

Designed by Zuccon International Project (exterior) and Studio Paolo Ferrari (interior), Virtuosity sits on an advanced diesel-electric platform.

  • Propulsion: 6 x Volvo D13-700 generators powering a system that offers a 6,000-nautical-mile range.
  • Volume: At approximately 1,950 GT, she is the largest yacht ever built by the Sanlorenzo shipyard.
