The Sports Car for Your Wrist: Inside Porsche Design’s Bespoke Timepiece Program

The intersection of high-octane engineering and Swiss horology has reached a new pinnacle with the Porsche Design Timepieces Manufaktur program. By bringing the “Exclusive Manufaktur” philosophy—the same bespoke treatment used for their sports cars—to the wrist, Porsche is offering enthusiasts what they call the “sports car for your wrist.”

Here is an editorial look at how the Solothurn-based manufacture is redefining custom luxury.

The Architecture of Performance: Titanium at the Core

True to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s philosophy that “form follows function,” every custom-built timepiece begins with a material synonymous with motorsport: Titanium.

Unlike the heavy stainless steel found in traditional luxury watches, Porsche Design exclusively uses titanium for its cases. This provides a hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and ultra-lightweight foundation. Customers can choose between two distinct finishes:

  • Natural Titanium: A glass-bead-blasted matte finish for a raw, technical look.
  • Black Titanium Carbide: A deep, PVD-coated matte black that echoes the stealthy aesthetics of Porsche’s “Black Edition” vehicles.

The “Engine” Under the Hood: Caliber WERK 01.100

A bespoke exterior requires a powerhouse movement. Each chronograph is powered by the WERK 01.100, a proprietary mechanical movement developed specifically for this program.

  • COSC-Certified: Every movement undergoes rigorous testing by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres to guarantee chronometer-level precision.
  • Flyback Function: A complication that allows the wearer to reset the chronograph to zero and restart it with a single push, a nod to the split-second needs of track racing.
  • The Winding Rotor: In perhaps the most literal bridge between car and watch, the winding rotor is a 1:22 scale replica of an actual Porsche wheel. You can spec yours to match the RS Spyder Design, 911 Turbo S, or Carrera Exclusive Design wheels, complete with a microscopic Porsche Crest in the center.

1.5 Million Ways to Configure

The hallmark of the Manufaktur program is its digital configurator. Utilizing the same Unreal Engine technology that powers the car configurator, it allows for over 1.5 million unique combinations.

  1. The Dial Ring: Choose from over 140 “Paint to Sample” (PTS) colors to match your car’s exterior, from iconic Guards Red to historical Gulf Blue.
  2. Interior Leather: The straps are crafted from the exact same Nappa leather used in Porsche interiors, available in the 14 official interior colors of the 911.
  3. The Stitching: Even the thread is authentic. You can select from 19 different colors of genuine Porsche vehicle yarn to finish your strap.

A Personalized Legacy

The final touch of the Manufaktur process is the high-precision laser engraving on the sapphire crystal case back. Owners often choose to engrave their name, a significant date, or the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of their Porsche, making the watch an inseparable companion to the vehicle itself.

Once a design is finalized, the watch is handcrafted in Solothurn and delivered within 12 to 16 weeks. It is more than a timepiece; it is a technical artifact of the owner’s personal racing history.
