Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung: The 30-Coupe AMG Built Without Compromise

There are limited-production cars, and then there are cars that feel as though someone inside the manufacturer was given permission to ignore the normal rules.

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung belongs firmly in the second category.

Revealed today, September 10, 2026, the Spezialanfertigung is an ultra-low-volume AMG based on the CLE Coupe, but almost nothing about it has been left untouched. Mercedes-AMG describes it as a car built around maximum driving dynamics, with a bespoke wide-body design, rear-wheel drive, a newly developed coilover suspension and approximately 170 kilograms removed from the standard car.

And then there is the number that gives the car its name.

646 horsepower.

The Engine: A New AMG V8

At the centre of the CLE 646 is AMG’s new-generation 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft.

The engine produces approximately 646 hp and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque, giving the CLE an entirely different character from the existing CLE 53. Earlier reports had identified the 646-hp figure while the car was still under development; Mercedes-AMG’s reveal now confirms the output and torque figures.

This is important because the CLE 646 isn’t simply a more powerful version of the six-cylinder CLE.

It is a return to the AMG formula that enthusiasts understand immediately:

big V8, rear-wheel drive and an aggressively engineered chassis.

The flat-plane crankshaft is particularly significant. Rather than simply increasing displacement or adding more electrical assistance, AMG has developed an engine intended to deliver a more motorsport-inspired character.

And unlike the four-cylinder plug-in-hybrid approach used by the current C 63, the CLE 646 puts the combustion engine at the centre of the experience.

Rear-Wheel Drive — Deliberately

Perhaps the most interesting specification is not the horsepower.

It is what Mercedes decided not to do with it.

The CLE 646 is rear-wheel drive.

That makes the car considerably more interesting than simply creating another all-wheel-drive AMG capable of launching itself from a standstill. The decision suggests that Mercedes-AMG wants this Spezialanfertigung to feel like a driver’s car first and a numbers machine second.

With 646 hp and 850 Nm going through the rear axle, the CLE 646 should demand considerably more from its driver than the ordinary CLE.

It also gives the car a direct connection to AMG’s older high-performance philosophy—before enormous power outputs became increasingly dependent on sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems.

170 Kilograms Disappear

The most revealing number might actually be the 170 kg weight reduction.

Mercedes-AMG has attacked the car’s mass because the objective wasn’t simply to create a faster CLE in a straight line.

It was to create a sharper one.

The Spezialanfertigung receives a newly developed coilover suspension, while the bodywork has been comprehensively redesigned around the wider track and aerodynamic requirements.

The result is a car intended to change direction more aggressively, respond more directly and maintain greater composure when pushed hard.

This is where the CLE 646 begins to move away from the traditional grand-touring character of the CLE and toward something much closer to a road-legal track weapon.

The Wide-Body Transformation

Visually, the Spezialanfertigung is almost unrecognisable compared with a standard CLE.

The body has been extensively widened, with dramatically flared wheel arches, revised aerodynamic surfaces and a far more aggressive front end.

The front receives larger cooling openings and aerodynamic elements, while the rear is dominated by a substantial wing and a redesigned diffuser.

The wide-body isn’t simply there for appearance.

The additional width gives AMG greater freedom with the track, wheel and tyre package while also creating space to develop the aerodynamic balance required by a car producing this level of performance.

Earlier prototypes spotted at the Nürburgring already showed the enormous visual transformation, including flared bodywork, revised aero, lowered suspension and a large rear wing.

193 MPH

The CLE 646 is reported to have a 193-mph top speed, putting it firmly into the territory occupied by AMG’s most serious performance machines.

Mercedes-AMG has not positioned this car as merely a luxury coupe with an oversized engine.

The engineering suggests something much more focused.

The combination of a 646-hp V8, 850 Nm, rear-wheel drive, extensive weight reduction, bespoke coilovers and wide-body aerodynamics creates a package designed around high-speed driving rather than simply headline acceleration.

Mercedes has not yet made a full official acceleration figure the centrepiece of the reveal, which may actually be appropriate.

The CLE 646 is about what happens after the launch.

The Mythos Connection

The Spezialanfertigung sits within Mercedes-AMG’s Mythos philosophy: ultra-exclusive vehicles produced in extremely small numbers for particularly select customers.

But the CLE 646 takes exclusivity to another level.

Only 30 examples will be produced worldwide.

And according to Mercedes-AMG, all 30 have already been sold.

That makes this less like a conventional new AMG model and more like a collector’s object that happens to have been engineered like a performance car.

For comparison, the first Mythos model, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, was produced in a run of 250 cars. The CLE 646 cuts that figure dramatically, making the new coupe one of the rarest modern AMG road cars.

Why This CLE Matters

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung arrives at an interesting moment for Mercedes-AMG.

The performance-car industry has spent years moving toward electrification, smaller engines and increasingly complicated hybrid systems. AMG itself has experimented heavily with electrified performance.

Yet this car takes a remarkably different approach.

It gives the customer a huge V8.

It removes weight.

It sends the power to the rear wheels.

It widens the body.

It develops bespoke suspension.

And then Mercedes builds only 30.

That makes the CLE 646 feel less like a response to the market and more like an engineering department being allowed to build the car it actually wanted to build.

The name Spezialanfertigung translates roughly to “special manufacture” or “custom-made.” In this case, the name is unusually appropriate.

This isn’t simply a CLE with more horsepower.

It is AMG asking how far the CLE platform could be pushed—and then apparently deciding that 30 customers were enough to justify finding out.

Thirty cars. 646 horsepower. 850 Nm. Rear-wheel drive. 170 kilograms removed.

The AMG CLE has officially gone from luxury coupe to collector-grade super coupe.

And unlike many modern performance cars, the most important part may not be how fast it is.

It may be how much of the old AMG attitude Mercedes managed to put back into it.
